Product Review: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream

After my colour match disappointment with Marcelle BB Cream I was on the hunt for a BB cream that would cater to my off-white skin colour. I thought maybe an Asian BB cream would be more my style, but honestly, I live in a smaller city and there is no where for me to get one. And with skin products I really want to try it before ordering it, which made me shy away from on-line ordering. While I was in Wal-Mart the other day I noticed that Maybelline had launched their own version of the BB Cream. I really like the Maybelline brand, and with a five colour selection I thought I might have better luck with this line.

Display at Wal-Mart (this is it even after I cleaned it up a bit for the photo...super messy!)

The Promise: This BB cream promises to be an 8-in-1 product (as can be seen on the front and back of the product). After a few days of wear this is how I feel towards these eight promises:

  1. Has SPF 30 - The level of SPF in this product is great, and ensures that I don't need an additional layer of sunscreen under it on a day when I'm just going to the office. The product has no smell other then a faint sunscreen smell (but it is very faint).
  2. Helps blur the look of imperfections - I like the wording of this one. Definitely a true marketers statement. I would say this product definitely leans more to a tinted moisturizer then a BB cream coverage or foundation coverage. It will even your skin tone but certainly will not hide anything.
  3. Creates a natural glow - This effect is very minimal. I could see it brighten my complexion but only slightly.
  4. Skin looks smoother - This statement I would agree with. It does a good job of evening skin tone as stated above, as well as makes your skin feel incredibly smooth once dry. Don't toss that concealer just yet! If you have things to cover (blemishes, hyper-pigmentation etc.) this product will not cover that.
  5. Compliments skin tone - With a five shade colour range I am fairly confident that most people could find a colour that would blend it. The lightest shade matched me perfectly. I like that they have mini testers out (which you can see in the display picture), but be aware that the testers have shade names while the actual products themselves do not (how strange?).
  6. Hydrates all day - It is extremely hydrating, but somehow walks that line of hydrating my skin without making it oily or dewy. The finish is initially a little scary, but once dried it is beautiful!
  7. Feels fresh - this product is super light weight. Once on, it feels like nothing but moisturized skin. No cakey-clearly-wearing-foundation face here. It is perfect for the summer!
  8. Oil free - This is perfect for us oily to combination skin girls! I set everything with powder (just a habit of a chronic oily skin girl) but had no problems with my face getting more greasy or getting greasy earlier then it usually does. If anything, this product kept my face matte longer then it usually would be on its own.

Any Flaws?: I am not sure I would recommend this product for dry skin girls. I have quite oily skin but had a dry spot from over medicating a blemish, and the BB cream stuck to the dry patch and made it flake. On the rest of my face it applied evenly and smoothly but I definitely had troubles with that one patch. Additionally, if you are going somewhere where you know your photo is going to be taken, I would not recommend this product due to the high amount of SPF. I'm not sure why but I wish they had shade names on the product..it bugs me for some reason. That is strictly a personal opinion though.

Titanium Dioxide Cream?: I will touch on this point lightly, since I am no scientist (help me out here Jayne?), but it is hard to ignore the "Titanium Dioxide Cream" statement printed right on the front of the product. I mean, how unappealing does that sound? I read a few articles on the matter, (which is the sunscreen ingredient in this product) and all seemed to state the same thing: as an ingredient, it is probably not good for you but there is nothing conclusive saying it will hurt you. We all know most products are better when they are as natural as possible, so it is up to you whether this statement turns you off of this product or not.

Would I Repurchase?: Definitely!! The colour match, the consistency, and the finish are all exactly what I was looking for. Would I love to have a product like this that didn't have an extra long ingredient list with words I can't pronounce? Of course! But despite all that I do love this product and would highly recommend it.

I hope this review was helpful!

  1. This review was so helpful!) It seems great, and I'm excited to test out the sample. I haven't come across it anywhere, I'm heading out in a bit so I am going to check Wal-mart. I would probably end up dabbing a bit of concealer on spots but I love that it has SPF, it's hydrating and how it also functions as a light foundation. Sounds perfect for summer. How is the price?

  2. I also await Jaynes science-y response about that. I love the marcelle bb cream though, it works great for me! It doesn't have SPF in it, though.

    2. The sun"block" "Titanium dioxide" is not a chemical, it is a natural UVA/UVB "sun block...so much healthyer than Chemical/synthetic SunScreens which numerous manmade acceleraters added to the product so it is quickly absorbed into the skin, tin which sun's rays are absorbed and then shatter...so still absorbed (seems more dangersous as the skin is a living organisum.

As with Mineral Make-up, one of the biggest selling points is the "Titanium Dioxide" which is a..yes, natural mineral.

  3. Oooh awesome review!!! I'm glad you found something for your fair skin! I agree that having "Titanium Dioxide" right on the front of the package or any full chemical name doesn't sound that attractive at all! I don't know a lot about the sunscreen and the chemicals involved...I COULD tell you a lot about what happens to your DNA when it's damaged by UV radiation and it has freaked me out enough to wear sunscreen all the time!

From what I understand, any product that has SPF has either zinc oxide or titanium oxide to absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. Zinc oxide provides the best protection from UVA radiation as it covers the entire UVA and UVB spectrum, while titanium oxide covers MOST of the UVA spectrum, but not at the longer wavelengths. I'm guessing the reason why titanium dioxide was used in this product is because it's not as thick as zinc oxide which might be a bit heavy on the pores. If something has titanium dioxide in it, there has to be something else in addition to it so that the rest of the UVA spectrum is covered.

I think the scary things we keep reading about are how either of these "dioxides" are cancer-causing. We might see those words associated more with titanium dioxide because the particles are generally smaller than those of zinc dioxide and once we move into the world of nanoparticles, we migrate into particles that can get into your DNA and disrupt normal gene function aka CANCER. The thing is, ANYTHING that is a nanoparticle can cause havoc with our DNA so it's not just titanium dioxide. Between having UV radiation mutating my DNA (KNOWN FACT) and titanium/zinc dioxide protecting my skin and perhaps causing cancer, I'd risk it and wear the BB Cream!

    1. I should probably add that there's no way our cosmetics would have nanoparticles in them. They're so unsafe!

    ReplyDelete

    1. That is what I have heard. The SPF can create a white cast on your face if there is enough sunscreen in it.. washing your face out. Just what I have heard though.. nothing can wash me out because my skin is so pale it's see through! Haha

  11. Great review!! I actually want to give this a try now! I just bought the Stila BB Cream and funny enough, although it says 10-in-1 BB cream, it doesnt actually have any sunscreen in it!

For me personally...I sort of like the idea of a "Titanium Dioxide" cream lol...I only use mineral sunscreens so I would prefer Titanium Dioxide to almost any other form of sunscreen. The only down side is that (and don't quote me here, lol) Titanium Dioxide doesnt protect you from the aging UVA rays as well as Zinc Oxide would. It would be better if they had both Titanium_D and Zinc-O in there as it would give more broad spectrum protection!

    1. I agree with you I have heard the same thing (at least now that I have done some research on it) I know some sunscreen ingredients are better then others... truthfully before this post I didn't know what any of them were! I always find it interesting when companies don't add least some SPF in their BB creams.. oh well!

  12. I bought this at my local jean coutu. They did have the testers out and that was for sure helpful! The only flaw? So many people had tried the testers and some had mixed colors. I bought the light/medium shade and its too light. I brought it back and they wouldn't accept to change the shade or refund. Now I'm out $11.99

    1. That's horrible! Where are you from? In Canada drugstores will return all makeup products if you aren't satisfied.. as you can see by the picture, the display I was at was quite picked over as well.. though I found the light tester to be true to the product I bought... I always get the lightest shade because I am so pale.. but if I wasn't I would have had a hard time picking a shade as well!

  16. Well written review, I purchased this the other day and find myself agreeing with much of what you say. I'll add that it really helped improve the appearance of the large pores and blackheads on my nose, which often look rough with traditional foundations.

However, as someone who works in cosmetics at a retail level I do have a few qualms with a couple things you said.

It says "titanium dioxide cream" because it's a sunscreen; in Canada because a sun protection protection product is registered as a drug and has a DIN, it has to list that kind of medical ingredient. There are lots of terrible sounding names in products; I disagree that the more natural a product is, the better. There are plenty of terrible 'natural' and organic products; both in terms of performance and the reactions they can cause. There are also lots of fantastic artificial, lab-made ingredients; we wouldn't eat much of anything or just any make up besides crushed up berries if we didn't use human-made ingredients. The name might *sound* scary, but it has been tested hundreds of times over decades by the FDA in the US and Health Canada as being safe for human use.

Further, I disagree with the statement that because it has SPF 30 it negates the need for a sunscreen product. You should be using a least a nickel-sized drop on sun screen on the face daily, and more on the neck, all over the face, to ensure adequate sun protection. A BB cream like this has ingredients other than sun protectants so you would need even more to ensure you got decent coverage. Add to this the fact that dermatologists the world over recommend reapplying sun protectants multiple times a day, and few people will apply another nickel (plus!) sized dollop a few hours after initial application. A foundation or BB cream simply does not have enough sun protection to be all that use for the day if you a truly concerned about your skin and keeping the effects of pre-mature aging at bay.

Thanks for taking the time to read my feedback; I look forward to checking out the rest of your blog!

  18. I've not heard about this Maybelline BB cream before, it hasn't hit our shores yet. It's interesting to see Western brands come up with their own BB creams which are more or less tinted moisturisers. I'm currently using an Asian BB cream (Missha Signature BB cream) and I'm guessing it's a lot different to this Maybelline one. But the Maybelline sounds like it was a hit with you, even though it might not be ideal for those with dry skin.
